I was inspired while I am on my readings that change the way we see the world. I came across design experts talking about ‘4 Quadrants of Design Responsibility’. Last week I watched the ‘Social Dilemma’, a docu-series on Netflix. Feel like readings & reels go hand in hand. Here are my takeaways!

Move from left to right (X-Axis): Your Constraints and interdependencies grow complex.

Move from bottom to top (Y-Axis): You design for Individual to Society. Fewer assumptions about needs and wants, motivations.

Why did the Helluva Fish Hook Come into the picture?

As you take inspiration from the real world (Back from History), this was designed to only catch halibut of a certain size. It left the small fish for future seasons, and it avoided the larger fish that were too big to haul into the canoe, which is a very practical design consideration.

Essentially, it allowed the people of that community to practice ‘sustainable fishing’, providing them with many seasons of prosperity. That alone makes it a fascinating, inspiring design artifact.

When you are designing for Ecosystem with humanity:

  1. You will encounter several challenges from political, social, and economic aspects.
  2. Your design must ensure security and privacy.
  3. You should increase the positive experience of the community Vs. bad actors misusing it.
  4. You think ethically and be responsible for the impact you make to humanity.
  5. Finally, use tech for good. Technology should be built and deployed in the service of humans ❤
